Marvel Studios delivered one of the biggest surprises at this year's San Diego Comic-Con when director Ryan Coogler announced David Jonsson as the next Black Panther in "Black Panther 3." The British actor will portray the grown-up Prince T'Challa II, carrying Wakanda's legacy into a new generation rather than replacing Chadwick Boseman's iconic hero. Already one of Britain's fastest-rising stars, Jonsson has quietly built an impressive résumé in recent years. From his unlikely journey into acting to his Hollywood breakthrough, here are five things to know about Marvel's newest leading man

He almost never became an actor

Jonsson's journey to Hollywood was far from straightforward. Growing up in Custom House, East London, he was expelled from a secondary school in Newham at 16 after getting into fights and skipping classes. The setback, however, proved to be a turning point. After transferring to a school in Hammersmith, he discovered acting through drama lessons before joining the National Youth Theatre, where he finally found a sense of purpose. Looking back, Jonsson has said that being expelled ultimately set him on the path to becoming an actor.

He trained at one of the world's most prestigious drama schools

Determined to pursue acting professionally, Jonsson earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), one of Britain's most prestigious drama schools. After graduating in 2016, he honed his craft on stage before making the transition to film and television. He appeared in acclaimed productions including Mary Stuart, Don Juan in Soho and And Breathe..., winning the Black British Theatre Award for Best Male Actor in a Play for the latter. That classical training continues to shape the emotional depth and versatility seen in his performances today.

Alien: Romulus turned him into Hollywood's next big star

Although Jonsson first gained recognition in HBO and BBC's series Industry (2020), many audiences discovered him through the acclaimed romantic comedy Rye Lane (2023), which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. He continued to build momentum with standout performances in Alien: Romulus (2024) and Stephen King's The Long Walk (2025).

In Alien: Romulus, Jonsson stole the spotlight as the synthetic Andy, effortlessly switching between a gentle, emotionally evolving android and a colder reprogrammed counterpart. Widely hailed as the emotional heart of the film, the performance earned him the BAFTA Rising Star Award and firmly established him as one of Hollywood's brightest emerging talents.

He's already making history before joining Marvel

Long before stepping into the Black Panther suit, Jonsson was already making history. In 2023, he became the first Black actor to lead a screen adaptation of an Agatha Christie story when he starred as Luke Fitzwilliam in the BBC drama Murder Is Easy (2023). He's also built a reputation for refusing to be boxed into a single genre, moving seamlessly between romance, period dramas, psychological thrillers and science fiction. That remarkable versatility is one of the reasons many believe he's the ideal choice to lead Marvel's next chapter of Wakanda.

Loewe has already made him its newest brand ambassador

Beyond acting, Jonsson is also making waves in the fashion world. Earlier this July, Spanish luxury house Loewe named the award-winning actor its newest brand ambassador following a string of standout appearances in the label. Announcing the partnership, creative directors Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez praised his curiosity, craftsmanship and willingness to embrace complexity - qualities they believe embody the spirit of the house. With Marvel's biggest role now ahead of him, Jonsson is fast emerging as one of Hollywood's most exciting new talent and style icons.
