Everything you need to know before watching "Spider-Man: Brand New Day"

Five years after "Spider-Man: No Way Home" changed Peter Parker’s life forever, Tom Holland is finally swinging back into cinemas. Directed by "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, "Brand New Day" finds an older and lonelier Peter protecting a New York that no longer remembers his name. From familiar MCU faces and returning enemies to a mysterious new transformation, here are five things to know before watching the film on July 31

At the end of No Way Home (2021), Peter asks Doctor Strange to erase him from everyone’s memory, saving the multiverse but sacrificing every relationship he has left. MJ and Ned no longer remember him, while the deaths of Aunt May and Tony Stark leave Peter without the family, guidance or resources he once relied on. Now living alone and wearing a suit he made himself, he can only watch his former friends move forward without him. The trailer even suggests that MJ has found a new love interest, adding another painful layer to the emotional pressure Peter carries into this new chapter.

With no Avengers duties or personal relationships left to anchor him, Peter has thrown himself into protecting New York full-time. This brings the MCU’s Spider-Man closer to his classic “friendly neighbourhood” roots: an independent hero tackling local crime while navigating the messiness of everyday life. Instead of travelling through space or joining another universe-saving battle, he is back among the streets and communities that need him most. However, that relentless routine is clearly taking its toll, with the official synopsis revealing that the growing pressure on Spider-Man eventually sparks a physical change Peter may not be able to control.

New enemies and a mysterious newcomer await

Peter will have no shortage of trouble waiting for him. Michael Mando returns as Mac Gargan, the criminal introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) who made his desire for revenge clear after Spider-Man helped send him to prison. He now reappears as Scorpion alongside other threats teased in the trailer, including the Hand and Tarantula. Meanwhile, Stranger Things star Sadie Sink joins the MCU in a closely guarded role. Jean Grey remains one of the most popular fan theories, particularly given the apparent mind-control threat teased in the film, although Sink’s character has not been officially revealed.

Familiar MCU antiheroes are joining the fight

Peter will not be facing these dangers alone, although the returning heroes may bring problems of their own. Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher, while Mark Ruffalo reprises his role as Bruce Banner and the Hulk. Frank’s willingness to kill criminals directly clashes with Spider-Man’s determination to protect life, making any partnership between them potentially explosive. Bruce, meanwhile, could help Peter understand his changing body, although the trailer also appears to show Spider-Man confronting an out-of-control Hulk who may be under the mysterious villain’s influence.

Peter is undergoing a dangerous transformation

The sequel’s biggest mystery may not be its invisible villain, but the disturbing change happening inside Peter. The official synopsis reveals that the pressure of living as Spider-Man full-time triggers a physical evolution that threatens his existence. Fans have already connected it to Man-Spider, the monstrous, multi-armed form from the comics in which Peter’s spider DNA overwhelms his humanity. Trailer footage shows his senses becoming distorted as webbing appears to emerge directly from his body, suggesting that his powers are growing stronger but dangerously unstable. The transformation could destroy him, yet it may also be his only chance of saving New York.
